Common questions before moving house
When should I start preparing for a house move?
Starting around eight weeks before moving day gives you time to compare quotations, declutter, arrange packing and update utilities. If you have less time, book the removal service first and work through the checklist in priority order.
What should I keep with me on moving day?
Keep keys, identification, contracts, medication, phones, chargers, valuables and your first-night essentials with you. Do not place them in boxes intended for the removals vehicle.
What should go in a first-night box?
Include toiletries, toilet paper, towels, bedding, a change of clothes, mugs, drinks, snacks, basic kitchen items, cleaning supplies, chargers and anything needed by children or pets.
Should I empty drawers before the move?
Ask your removal company. Light clothing may sometimes remain inside sturdy furniture, but heavy, fragile or valuable items should normally be removed. Overfilled drawers can damage furniture and make it unsafe to carry.
Which items should not go in the removals vehicle?
Removal companies commonly restrict hazardous, flammable, explosive, perishable or improperly packed items. Keep personal documents, medication, jewellery and irreplaceable valuables with you and confirm the mover's prohibited-items policy.
